The five countries of Luso-Africa

LAMP International is committed to helping Luso-Africans receive advanced theological training. Formal education is expensive, and the quality of theology and ministry programs in Portuguese-speaking Africa varies widely. Through the Thomas “W” Fife memorial scholarship fund, we subsidize the cost for African church leaders to pursue educational opportunities with institutions that uphold the inspiration and authority of Scripture, and utilize knowledgeable, experienced professors.

Thomas "W" Fife 1931-2020

Tom Fife was a missionary to Brazil from 1964 to 1991. His zeal for God’s mission was the foundation of his vision that reached from Brazil across the Atlantic Ocean to Luso-Africa – Africa’s Portuguese-speaking nations. During his lifetime, Tom made many trips to Luso-Africa, including the countries of Cabo Verde, Guine-Bissau, Angola, and Mozambique.

Additionally, We provide scholarships for a smaller number of gifted teachers to get university degrees in theology. These students take night classes online through the Portuguese Bible Institute in Lisbon. To qualify for financial assistance, they must also share what they learn through teaching others. A full scholarship is $1000/year.

Tom’s visits to Angola and his passion for theological education inspired the generation of church leaders who, years later, opened the door for the Angola Mission Team to work with the Church of Christ in Angola. Fife’s teaching also motivated several young Angolan students to seek more advanced theological education in Brazil. One of Tom’s former students, Afonso Teca, is now the director of the Christian Theological Institute of Angola (ITCA).

We hope this scholarship will honor the legacy of Tom Fife and his enthusiasm for theological education in Luso-Africa.

The Scholarship Fund

Tom with students in Mozambique

The Angola Mission Team has partnered with Dr. Afonso Teca, leading theologian in Luso-Africa and former student of Tom Fife, and the Church of Christ in Angola to offer a two-year Bible and Ministry program (ITCA). Students take courses in the Bible, biblical interpretation, historical context, modern cultural contexts, and ministry practices.

Through the Fife Scholarship Fund you can help us train 100 Angolan church leaders in biblical interpretation and ministry.

The entire program costs $350 to complete, and we ask students to pay about $50 over two years. We aim to train 100 students in 2023-2024. Please join us and sponsor a student for $300.
